My name Brooke Kolozsvari and my major area of study is Political Science with a minor in Communication. My pronouns are her, hers, and she, and I am here to raise awareness about the cultural stigmas associated with being a woman and pursuing careers that are male dominated.
Women and stigma...
Growing up, I have always been told that I can’t pursue certain careers because, I’m not smart enough, I’m not a strong leader, or simply that I’m just a woman and I can’t do that. These words were not just my reality at the time, but they were also a reality in which plenty of women have faced. In fact, as women we are told that we aren’t ‘good enough’ to be CEOs, engineers, or even mechanics because, we are ‘weak’ or not ‘smart’ enough to pursue such careers. These negative stigmas and stereotypes are very problematic because, less and less women are wanting to pursue fields in these areas because of the fear that they will be seen as inferior to their male counterparts.
Overcoming this challenge...
With that being said, we must raise awareness and encourage women to break the cultural stigma of what we ‘ought’ and ‘should do.’ We must recognize that women are just worthy, powerful, smart, and capable.
