My Experience as a Latinx Immigrant

By Johnny Mondragon

I find it compelling towards what it means to be an immigrant in the U.S. Your immigration status is based off the idea of being foreign, which further perpetuates the idea of an immigrant being a person of color. The idea of an immigrant or foreigner being a person of color further triggers scrutiny, because of the racial discourses that we see today of being Latinx, Middle Eastern, or Asian as being the problems of white Americans crime and social economic statuses. Being a person of color and being an immigrant means hearing back lash from white Americans say things like, “If you don’t like here go back to where you came from!” or simply questioning your citizen status saying things like “Were you born here?” European immigrants don’t get these same remarks from white Americans, because of their similarities in skin color that further raises the question on how race still plays a role on who is accepted into U.S. society.
